Generic Name: Tropicamide
Drug Class: Anticholinergics

Uses:

Tropicamide is used to widen (dilate) the pupil of the eye for certain eye examinations. It works by relaxing specific eye muscles to facilitate the examination process.

How to Use Tropicamide Drops:

Preparation:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before application.
  • If you are wearing contact lenses, remove them before using the drops. Consult your doctor about when you can reinsert them.

Application:

  • Tilt your head back, look upward, and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pouch.
  • Hold the dropper above the eye and place 1 or 2 drops into the pouch.
  • Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Apply gentle pressure at the corner of your eye near the nose for 2 to 3 minutes to prevent the medication from draining away.
  • Avoid blinking or rubbing your eye.
  • Repeat the procedure for the other eye if instructed.

Post-Application:

  • Do not rinse the dropper; replace the cap after use.
  • If using other eye medications, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before applying them. Apply eye drops before eye ointments.
  • Wash your hands after applying the medication.
  • Ensure that the medication does not get into the child’s mouth if applying it to a child’s eyes. Wash the child’s hands afterward.
