Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat various conditions related to excess stomach acid:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Treats symptoms such as heartburn and esophageal injury caused by acid reflux in adults and children (1 year and older). Helps heal damage to the esophagus and prevent further damage.
  • Damage from GERD: Allows the esophagus to heal in adults and children (1 month and older).
  • Prevention of Stomach Ulcers: Reduces the risk of ulcers in patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Helicobacter pylori Infection: Used with other medications to treat and prevent stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori infection in adults.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Treats conditions where the stomach produces excessive acid in adults.
  • Frequent Heartburn (Over-the-Counter Use): Used for frequent heartburn (occurring at least 2 days a week) in adults.

How Should This Medicine Be Used?

  • Prescription Esomeprazole:
    • Forms: Delayed-release capsules (oral) or granules for suspension (mix with water).
    • Administration: Usually taken once daily at least 1 hour before a meal. For conditions with excessive acid production, it may be taken twice daily.
    • Capsules: Swallow whole. If unable to swallow, mix with applesauce and swallow immediately.
    • Granules: Mix with water and consume within 30 minutes.
  • Nonprescription Esomeprazole:
    • Forms: Delayed-release capsules or tablets.
    • Administration: Typically taken once daily in the morning for 14 days. Additional 14-day treatments can be repeated, not more frequently than every 4 months.

Important Instructions:

  • Timing: Take at the same time each day. Follow the prescription label and avoid taking more or less than directed.
  • Missed Dose: Take as soon as possible unless close to the next dose. Do not double doses.
  • Diet: Continue a normal diet unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Special Precautions:

  • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you have allergies to esomeprazole or other PPIs.
  • Interactions: Certain medications and herbal products may interact with esomeprazole. Discuss all medications with your doctor.
  • Health Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have conditions like low magnesium, calcium, or potassium levels, hypoparathyroidism, osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases, or liver disease.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Older Adults: Discuss risks and benefits if you are 70 or older.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, gas, constipation, dry mouth, drowsiness, erectile dysfunction in men.
  • Serious: Skin blisters, peeling, sores, swollen glands, shortness of breath, severe rash, irregular heartbeat, severe diarrhea, new or worsening joint pain, kidney problems.

Storage and Disposal:

  • Storage: Keep in the original container, tightly closed, at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
  • Disposal: Do not flush down the toilet. Use a take-back program or follow FDA guidelines for safe disposal.

In Case of Emergency/Overdose:

  • Symptoms of Overdose: Confusion, drowsiness, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, nausea, sweating, flushing, headache, dry mouth.
  • Contact: Poison control at or emergency services if severe symptoms occur.

Additional Information:

  • Appointments: Keep all medical appointments and laboratory tests.
  • Medication List: Maintain a written list of all medications and supplements you are taking.
