Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with protein synthesis. It's used to treat or prevent various bacterial infections.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Drug Interactions: Erythromycin can interact with several medications, including:
    • Cisapride
    • Pimozide
    • Ergotamine and Dihydroergotamine
    • Lovastatin and Simvastatin
  • Health Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have:
    • Liver disease
    • Myasthenia gravis

How to Use

  • Oral Erythromycin: Take as prescribed, with or without food. Chew chewable tablets before swallowing and avoid crushing or breaking delayed-release capsules.
  • Injection: Administered into a vein for severe infections.
  • Completion: Continue use for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve.

Missed Dose and Overdose

  • Missed Dose: Take as soon as possible, but skip if it's close to the next dose. Do not double up.
  • Overdose: Seek emergency medical help or contact the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Avoid While Using Erythromycin

  • Anti-diarrhea Medications: May worsen or mask signs of a new infection.

Side Effects

Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic Reactions: Hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat.
  • Severe Skin Reactions: Fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin rash.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Severe stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea.
  • Heart Problems: Headache with chest pain, severe dizziness, fast heartbeats.
  • Pancreatitis: Severe upper stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Liver Problems: Loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice.
