Description

Dutasteride is used to treat men with symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland is enlarged. This enlargement can cause urinary problems such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, or incomplete bladder emptying. Dutasteride may be used alone or in combination with tamsulosin (Flomax®) to manage these symptoms.

Dutasteride works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into a hormone that promotes prostate growth. By inhibiting this enzyme, dutasteride reduces prostate size. The effect of dutasteride persists only as long as the medication is taken; stopping the medication will result in the prostate regrowing.
