What is Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium?

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is a combination antibiotic. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that fights bacteria, while clavulanate potassium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents bacteria from resisting the effects of amoxicillin. This medication treats various bacterial infections, including sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.

Warnings

  • Contraindications: Do not use if you have severe kidney disease, a history of liver problems or jaundice from previous use, or if you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Form Variations: If switching between different forms (regular, chewable, or extended-release), use only the prescribed form and strength.
  • Breastfeeding: This medication can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
  • Birth Control: This drug may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Use a non-hormonal method of contraception while taking it.

Before Taking This Medicine

Do not use if you have:

  • Severe kidney disease or are on dialysis
  • Liver problems or jaundice from previous amoxicillin and clavulanate use
  • Allergies to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics

Inform your doctor if you have:

  • Liver disease (e.g., hepatitis or jaundice)
  • Kidney disease
  • Mononucleosis

Dosage and Administration

  • How to Take: Take exactly as prescribed, usually at the start of a meal.
  • Tablet Form: Swallow extended-release tablets whole or split them as directed. Chewable tablets must be chewed before swallowing.
  • Oral Suspension: Shake well before measuring, and use the provided syringe or a proper dose-measuring device.

Complete the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Store tablets at room temperature and liquid form in the refrigerator. Discard unused liquid after 10 days.

Missed Dose

Take as soon as possible, but skip if it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not double up.

Overdose

In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, rash, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and decreased urination.

Side Effects

  • Serious Side Effects: Seek emergency help if you experience allergic reactions (e.g., hives, breathing difficulty) or severe skin reactions (e.g., blistering, peeling skin).
  • Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, itching, vaginal itching or discharge, and diaper rash.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor if you are taking:

  • Allopurinol
  • Probenecid
  • Blood thinners like warfarin, Coumadin, or Jantoven

What to Avoid

  • High-fat Meals: Avoid taking the medication with or just after a high-fat meal as it may reduce absorption.
  • Diarrhea: Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. Contact your doctor before using anti-diarrhea medication if you develop watery or bloody diarrhea.
